LEARN MORE The objective of the SophiA project is to provide sustainable off-grid energy supplies and clean drinking water for rural and remote health facilities in Africa, thereby accelerating the sustainable development, growth and economic transformation, and ensuring improved access to energy and health services for all.
Once operational, the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, located on Dogger Bank, 195 kilometres off the northeast coast of the UK, will transmit low-carbon electricity generated from 100 Siemens Gamesa 14 megawatt (MW) wind turbines. The energy will be carried through subsea export cables to landfall in Redcar, Teesside, 220 kilometres away.
So far at Sofia, more than half of the offshore turbine foundations have been installed, the offshore converter station, onshore substation, and onshore and offshore export cables are also in place, in preparation for first generation later this year.
