Despite the benefits, few studies such as Gonzalez Sanchez et al., 2021, Moner-girona et al., 2021 conducted review works assessing floating solar photovoltaics potential in existing hydropower reservoirs in Africa.
Ghana, a country located in Sub-Saharan Africa, experiences significant levels of solar radiation throughout the year, hence, has excellent potential for FPV installation on other two of its hydropower reservoirs (Akosombo-Black Volta dam reservoir, and Kpong river) and also to expand the existing Bui floating solar generation on the Black Volta.
In this study, Google earth program was used to assess and illustrate the energy production capacities per considered surface areas on the Akosombo reservoir. The potential of floating solar PV energy production at Akosombo dam site were investigated considering less than o.1% (<0.1) reservoir coverage area.
